Mark your calendars!

The Barbary Coast Bull Terrier Club's Spring Puppy Match will be held on Sunday, March 15th. Please join us for a club potluck and family day. Club and dog-tolerant Bull Terriers, and folks with an interest in Bull Terriers are welcome (please bring crates for your dogs). Puppies get early show training at these events. Veteran and Rescue dogs are encouraged to participate in the parade.

Directions:

From I-80 - at Fairfield, take I-80 South toward San Jose/Benicia. After approximately 51 miles, take exit 20 for Andrade Road toward Sheridan Road. Turn right on Andrade Road and turn left on Mission Road to 5815.

From San Jose - take I680 North toward Sacramento for approximiately 18 miles, take exit 18B for Sheridan Road. Turn left on Sheridan, then turn right on Mission Road to 5815.

A Village Needed For Sweet Bubba - GOAL MET!!!

Some of you may know Bubba by his former name, Dutch. This honeysweet little guy has gone through so much! Bubba was abandoned in the streets and had a broken left rear leg that was left untreated for months. We raised $710 last year for his neuter and to insert a pin in his leg. The pin was adjusted as it was pressing against his sciatic nerve and eventually had to be removed ahead of schedule due to the pain. Although his bone has healed, he has suffered damage to his sciatic nerve; and he has chewed his toes nearly down to the bone. The best option now to save him from his pain and discomfort would be an amputation of the leg. Bubba's young (a year or so old), very agile and has a great disposition so he's an excellent candidate for an amputation. Plus, he's already not using the leg so his compensation for the loss is already in progress.

The estimate for the surgery is $1500-$1800 which includes a courtesy extraction of a canine tooth with exposed pulp. We don't know how he's been so sweet and affectionate despite all his pain!

I know times are rough but we just had to give Bubba a well-deserved chance and fundraise for this final surgery to resolve all of this little pumpkin's pain. Once he's recovered, this compact 42lb tripod will be available for adoption. He is good with other dogs (wants to play with the resident female BT), great with children but is not cat-safe. He is very sweet and extremely affectionate.

Bubba has a recovery spot lined up but a home where he'll be fostered with the possibility of adoption would be ideal!

Words cannot express the depth of my gratitude for the emotional and financial support received for this wiggly boy. Rest assured that I will hug the stuffing out of each one of you when we meet!!!

I've been in touch with a down-to-earth vet acupuncturist who has suggested some self-diagnostics before acupuncture and amputation should be considered. We'll run through some exercises and are keeping our paws crossed for the best! Please stay tuned for updates. I'm truly honored to be a part of such a caring and wonderful bully community!

Thank You For Your Ongoing Patience!

Just wanted to shout a quick "Thanks!" for everyone's patience and understanding. It's been rough year so far with hectic work schedules, a record number of incoming bull terriers, and the declining health of my personal dogs.

I'm running at least a month behind on applications and at a week behind on inquiries but please know that I WILL eventually be returning your call! In the interim, please feel free to call me at 415/672-7391. I don't mind Nag-A-Grams! Really!

Special Foster Home Needed For Sergeant

Sarge is a delightful 2yo boy who is getting into fights with the resident intact lab male. He is great with his family's 2yo daughter and 7yo son. He peacefully co-exists with his family's indoor cats but has dispatched a feral one that jumped into his outdoor pen. Sarge is very affectionate and is a world-class cuddler!

Sarge needs a foster home by March 3rd. We are seeking a bull breed savvy (or one familiar with dog-aggression) permanent/foster home that could help nurse him through his neuter and foster him until a suitable home is found. Since he doesn't play well with most dogs, we would not be able to house him at our boarding kennel. Sarge is about 45 pounds; he is house and crate trained.

3/1: Sarge passed his evaluation with flying colors yesterday. We found a very charming, people-oriented and curious guy who's very amenable to corrections once he knows you're in charge - basically a normal BT with testosterone issues. He tried to stir up a little trouble with an intact Bull Terrier male but was distracted both times and moved on to exploring the room instead. He acknowleged a spayed female pit bull mix by wagging his tail at her. Sarge apparently still plays well with a neutered chocolate Lab so we really think his incidents are testosterone related. He'll be neutered and will do a few weeks' quasi-bootcamp time (thanks, Melinda!!!). Sarge will need obedience and leash training; and he'll thrive in a structured environment.

Introducing Our Compassion Program

Sometimes a terminally ill or severely dog aggressive bull terrier lands at the shelter through no fault of its own. Do you have the emotional armor to volunteer a bit of time to ensure that such a dog enjoys his/her last hours or days before leaving this planet in loving arms? If so, please contact me for more details.

Modeled after BAD RAP's program, my catalyst and inspiration is a sweet little old and almost hairless unnamed boy who was picked up off the streets by a local Police Department and brought to the Animal Shelter. His eyes were in bad shape; one was badly ulcerated and needed to be removed but due to his severe mange, he likely wouldn't have survived the surgery. Despite his obvious pain and discomfort, he gave the kennel staff big wags and kisses when he was bathed. He wanted to be with people instead of being kenneled alone while waiting for the drugs that would release him permanently from his pain.

I felt compelled to help future bull terriers in this old boy's situation. Many times these dogs have been neglected/abused in their former homes. They are most deserving to be finally loved, albeit a very short time, before they leave this world. Please contact me if you can help make a difference for the dogs selected for this program.
